Updated site

I've made some changes to my site, including a link to other pages I've written here. I posted a page that has useful AppleScript handler code-bits, and added a Page List link in the MENU on my weblog main page. I also framed each page to make navigation easier.

Merge Telephone, Internet Numbers

A Reuters report at
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&ncid=582&e=3&cid=582&u=/nm/20030213/wr_nm/tech_enum_dc starts with:
"The U.S. government on Thursday threw its weight behind an emerging standard that could simplify personal communications by providing a single point of contact for telephone and Internet communications."

This sounds intriguing, and as the article points out, we'll need a serious consideration of spam/privacy laws before this would make any sense from a user point of view. Who really wants spammers to be able to flood you with unwanted recorded messages, SMS phone text messages, or pages? Actually, this sounds like a really good idea, as this new method of contact will probably be designed to protect against abuse from the ground up, in which case many people could screen all contact through this number.

FileMaker Admits a Serious Problem

"FileMaker is aware of, and actively investigating, reports of files occasionally being damaged or corrupted when the current version of FileMaker Server (version 5.5), running on Mac OS X or Mac OS X Server, is shut down before hosted files are closed. "

Well, it only took four days of angry posts on Macintouch.com for FileMaker, Inc. to admit a problem that has been plaguing its Macintosh customers for at least a year. Now, they say they'll get to work on figuring it out. Great.

Bio Update

My wife just pointed out to me that I wrote a bio when I started this that should be updated. I guess I should re-read my own posts when I wait that long between posts. So, we were married in November, and have been very happy together, despite bouts with strep throat and the flu. We're both fairly healthy again, and thus our employers have been having us make up for lost productivity, or so it seems. :-)

Anyway, we live in NJ, near Philadelphia, in a nice house with a dog and a cat. Maybe I'll post a few pictures at some point.

The Greater Threat?

There is a discussion at QuickTopic.com about whether North Korea is a greater threat than Iraq. This may be the case, but their acknowledged possession of nuclear weapons changes the dynamic. In Iraq's case, we may be able to prevent a dangerous dictator from obtaining them. If we wait until he has them, it will be TOO LATE.

Scary thought: Iraq only needs the ability to hit Israel. They will HAVE to defend themselves, and then Saddam may be able to get other Arab countries to side WITH him. Anyone else want to wait until Saddam has that ability? I sure don't, because that would be almost a worst-case scenario. Anyone think that Saddam would not love to see many countries rally around him? Right now, he has few real allies, and is viewed with distrust by his neighbors.

Daniel A. Shockley - POSTing web forms

I like to write, and I like to help people. I post to a bunch of message-boards, but most frequently to the MacScripter.net AppleScript BBS. I contributed to a thread recently on taking input in FileMaker Pro, doing a search on a web engine using that input, and returning the results to FileMaker. I summarized my explanation here on my own site at Form POSTing.

I also updated my index page slightly to actually show the few pages I've put up here, including a link to this WebLog. So, I may just start actually having visitors, right? :-)

That's it for now. I hope to do more updates as I get the time.
